Former President Donald Trump met with House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy on Thursday to discuss efforts to win the majority of the House of Representatives in 2022 after Republicans were able to pick up at least 15 seats from the Democrats in last year’s election.
The two Republicans met at Mar-a-lago, where the former president is currently based after departing the White House on January 20th. Trump and McCarthy reportedly had a “very good and cordial” meeting according to a readout provided by Trump’s Political Action Committee (PAC) Save America.
Trump’s team noted that the House GOP leader “welcomed” the former president’s support in promoting Republican candidates in efforts to take over the majority of the House in next year’s midterm elections.
“They discussed many topics, number one of which was taking back the House in 2022,” the statement read. “President Trump’s popularity has never been stronger than it is today, and his endorsement means more than perhaps any endorsement at any time.”
“President Trump has agreed to work with Leader McCarthy on helping the Republican Party to become a majority in the House,” Save America PAC added. “They worked very well together in the last election and picked up at least 15 seats when most predicted it would be the opposite. They will do so again, and the work has already started.”
The meeting came as Republicans were able to narrow the Democratic majority in the House. Democrats currently hold a 221-211 advantage with three vacancies, putting Republicans in a good position to pick up House seats during the 2022 midterms.
Defying expectations, GOP flipped at least 13 congressional seats from Democrat to Republican. They also won a 14th seat in Michigan that was initially held by retiring Libertarian Justin Amash and Republicans are expected to pick up another seat in New York’s congressional race between Republican Claudia Tenney and Democrat Anthony Brindisi that has yet to be decided.
McCarthy confirmed his meeting with the former president tweeting afterwards: “United and ready to win in ‘22.”

“President Trump committed to helping elect Republicans in the House and Senate in 2022,” McCarthy said in a statement.
The Republican lawmaker also blasted the early priorities of the Democratic party that currently controls the White House, the Senate and the House.
“A Republican majority will listen to our fellow Americans and solve the challenges facing our nation. Democrats, on the other hand, have only put forward an agenda that divides us — such as impeaching a President who is now a private citizen and destroying blue-collar energy jobs,” he said.
“For the sake of our country, the radical Democrat agenda must be stopped. A united conservative movement will strengthen the bonds of our citizens and uphold the freedoms our country was founded on.”
The House minority leader was also reportedly in Florida this week for a fundraising as the House is on break.
