While not every music artist that releases an album is going to make big money, some individuals and groups rocketed to fame, allowing them to make a fortune. It usually takes time to rise through the ranks of the best-selling musicians, so it’s no surprise that many of these stars spent a lot of time in the industry.
Business Insider compiled a list of the best-selling music artists of all time. The results are based on US album sales, including through streaming services. Those who made the list span a variety of genres and most people have heard of every individual or group in the top 10.
1. The Beatles
With 178 certified units sold, The Beatles are by far the best-selling musicians of all time, even without considering their solo projects.
2. Garth Brooks
The leading country star is Garth Brooks with 148 million units. While he dabbled in rock under the moniker Chris Gaines, that venture wasn’t nearly as successful as when he stuck to his roots.
3. Elvis Presley
The “King of Rock ‘N’ Roll” is still going strong with 146.5 million units.
4. Led Zeppelin
The rock group Led Zeppelin also makes a strong appearance. In total, they have sold 111.5 million units.
Known for the classic “Hotel California,” the Eagles have managed to sell 101 million units.
6. Billy Joel
With 82.5 million units, “Piano Man” Billy Joel makes it to number six on the list.
7. Michael Jackson
Some may be surprised that Michael Jackson only ranks at number seven. However, his total units sold is 81 million, leaving him well out of the top 10.
8. Elton John
Elton John has made a mark on the music industry, allowing him to sell 78 million units.
9. Pink Floyd
Many would say that Pink Floyd’s appeal is certainly long-lasting. With 75 million units sold, they come in at number nine.
Rounding out the top 10 is AC/DC. In total, they have sold 72 million units.
