Trooper Michael Patterson wasn’t expecting to have a reunion with someone who had such a dramatic impact on his life when he pulled over Matthew Bailly, a former cop. As the two were talking during the stop, they began discussing their background, and it turned out they had a much closer connection than just the neighborhood where Patterson grew up.

Patterson, a New Jersey state trooper, pulled Bailly over in Kingwood Township on Friday for a window tint violation.

After they began to talk, Bailly revealed that he used to be a cop in Piscataway, the same area where Patterson grew up. Then, Bailly mentioned that, on October 5, 1991, when he was a rookie officer, he assisted in delivering a baby. He discussed the color and style of the home and mentioned that the child’s name was Michael.

As the conversation progressed, the pair determined that Bailly was an officer who assisted in delivering Patterson when his mother unexpectedly went into labor at a shopping mall and hurried home about 27 years ago.

After the revelation, Patterson extended his hand, saying, “My name is Michael Patterson, sir. Thank you for delivering me.”

On that day, 27 years ago, with the assistance of a doctor on the phone, Bailly helped Patterson’s mother, Karen, give birth.

After the chance meeting, the trio reunited, reminiscing about that fateful day and discussing the encounter that brought them all back together.

They also took photos commemorating the event, which were shared by the New Jersey State Police on Facebook.

“We’re not sure what the odds are of this happening,” said the police department in a Facebook post. “Maybe they’re close to the odds of a hole-in-one, winning the lottery, or being struck by lightning – but it happened.”

They added, “They all felt this story was so uplifting, it needed to be shared, and we agree! After all, as a police officer, you don’t always get a chance to have a moment like this with people you once helped in your career!”

The story quickly went viral on Facebook, generating over 18,000 likes, according to a report by the Daily Mail.
