When a man stole a cash register drawer from a Walmart, he was looking for a way to make a quick getaway. He attempted to carjack two separate vehicles, both occupied by customers, by threatening them with a knife but was thwarted when the would-be victims both produced firearms and prepared to defend themselves.

The incident took place on Friday at a Walmart at River City Marketplace in Jacksonville, Florida, according to a report by Fox 30.

Christopher Raymond Hill, 36, went into a Walmart liquor store and request change for a $20. The cashier informed Hill that he would have to make a purchase before the drawer could be opened, so he bought a pack of cigarettes.

Initially, LaToya King, the cashier, didn’t think anything of Hill’s request, particularly since he was wearing bright orange. However, once she opened the drawer, things took a turn.

“When I did that, he leaped over the counter, and he grabbed my hand, and I was like, ‘Sir, what are you doing?’” said King.

Hill grabbed the door and sprinted out of the store. He headed for a silver SUV in the parking lot, but a witness stated that the vehicle wouldn’t start.

Hill then approached a man, identified as Scott Reardean, sitting near the Supercuts, asking for a ride. When Reardean refused, Hill produced a knife and cut his hands and legs as them men began to struggle.

“I was basically just doing this, trying to get the knife off me,” said Reardean, “and he’s like trying to pull me, and he yanked my shirt and ripped it all up.”

During the altercation, Reardean was able to grab a pistol from his truck. He pointed the firearm at Hill, who then fled toward a nearby Starbucks.

Hill then approached a woman near the Starbucks drive-through. When she rolled down her passenger side window to see what Hill wanted, he opened the door and got into the car.

The woman says Hill told her to drive because he was being chased. She attempted to push Hill out of the vehicle, but he wouldn’t leave.

Fearing for her life, the woman exited the vehicle and went to retrieve a Ruger pistol she had stored in her trunk. When she pointed it at Hill, he ran into the Supercuts and barricaded himself in the bathroom.

Police soon arrived on the scene, and Hill exited the bathroom once he was instructed to do so by law enforcement.

He was taken into custody and charged with strong arm robbery, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, carjacking with a firearm or deadly weapon, and trespassing.
