Most people have jokingly said that washing machines and dryers must eat socks after discovering one in the laundry and not being able to find its partner. Last year, a woman shared pictures that reveal a hidden compartment her husband found that was filled with socks, change, and even a credit card.

The discovery was originally made by Cathy Hinz and her husband, both property managers working at a manufactured home park, last year.

Hinz shared the discovery on Bored Panda, including multiple images of what they found when cleaning out the secret compartment.

“My husband got tired of fooling with one of the washing machines that was just not working properly and decided to take it apart, starting with the bottom panel,” said Hinz. “To his shock, this is what he found. Socks, underwear, a credit card… and that is just what was in the bottom of the machine. When he removed the water pump that removes water from the machine, he found about $7.00 in change.”

A Twitter post earlier in the month brought new attention to the images, garnering over 26,000 retweets and hundreds of comments.

One reply stated, “You’ve found the portal to the Land of Lost Left Socks.”

Other users explored their own washers and dryers, posting their discoveries.

Some Twitter users decided to dole out advice, such as putting socks “in a mesh laundry bag to keep them safe,” while others also noted that trapped items could “break your washer.”

Hinz had had also shared some advice, stating that “next time you are missing socks, just remember! That washing machine might just be hungry!”
