Majority of Republicans believe that President Donald Trump “rightfully won” the presidential election last November 3 but it was stolen from him by rampant voter fraud that favored Democratic nominee, Joe Biden, according to a recent poll conducted by Reuters/Ipsos.

The survey — released Wednesday — found 52% of Republicans saying the incumbent Republican chief executive won the White House race, compared to the 29% who said it was former vice president Biden.

The poll was taken among 1,346 Americans on November 13-17, almost two weeks after the election with a +/- five percent margin of error.

Majority of GOP think election was ‘rigged’

“About half of all Republicans believe President Donald Trump ‘rightfully won’ the US election but that it was stolen from him by widespread voter fraud that favored Democratic President-elect Joe Biden, according to a new Reuters/Ipsos opinion poll,” Reuters tweeted.

“The opinion poll showed that Trump’s open defiance of Biden’s victory in both the popular vote and Electoral College appears to be affecting the public’s confidence in American democracy, especially among Republicans,” the report said.

The survey showed nonetheless that 73% agreed that Biden won the presidential election while 5% said it was President Trump.

“But when asked specifically whether Biden had ‘rightfully won,’ Republicans showed they were suspicious about how Biden’s victory was obtained,” it added.

Reuters said 68% of Republicans said they were worried that the election was “rigged” against President Trump, while only 16% of Democrats and one-third of independents showed a similar concern.

More Americans suspicious of 2020 election

Meanwhile, although 55% of Americans said the November 3 election was “legitimate and accurate” according to the Reuters/Ipsos survey — this was down seven points compared to the result of a similar poll done shortly after the 2016 election as more Americans now appear suspicious of the US election process in this cycle than they were four years ago.

Reuters noted that those who thought the November 3 election was the “result of illegal voting or election rigging” was at 28%, up double-digits or by 12 points compared to four years ago.

“The poll showed Republicans were much more likely to be suspicious of Trump’s loss this year than Democrats were when Hillary Clinton lost four years ago,” the report added.

“They didn’t even allow Republican Observers into the building to watch. A terrible insult to our Constitution!” President Trump tweeted referring to Pennsylvania’s Supreme Court decision rejecting the Trump campaign’s claims of voting irregularities.

The Reuters poll came as Politico/Morning Consult also released the findings of its poll where 46% of Americans said want President Trump to concede “right away” — but 67% of Republican’s doubting that the election was “ free and fair.”

President Trump’s camp has maintained massive voting fraud occurred in multiple key battleground states which tilted the votes in favor of Biden, amid multiple reports of such irregularities being reported.
