Some stories have happy endings. This is one, in as much as what began as a potentially deadly encounter ended when bystanders took matters in their pwn hands. A mother and daughter on their way to school thwarted a kidnapping. After rescuing the victim, the pair chased the perpetrator for more than 10 minutes, and he’s now behind bars.

The mother and daughter have not chosen to identify themselves. The mother’s name is Cecilia. She and her daughter were driving to school last Thursday in Houston when they saw the man trying to force a teenage girl into his truck.

“We could see when she was trying to get away from him, forcefully pushing him, and that’s when she turned around and looked at us,” Cecilia’s daughter, who also witnessed the incident, told ABC 13.

The two pulled up behind the man’s truck. The distraction was enough for the girl to get free of the man, and she jumped into the car with the mother and daughter.

The incident could have ended there, but it didn’t. The mother drove after the truck, which sped away.

“Thank you, miss!” the girl says in Spanish. Together, they followed the truck, chasing it at times. The man driving eventually ran off the road into a ditch, and the women boxed him in.

Daniel Zapata was behind the wheel. Police, who had been alerted of the incident and the chase, arrested him at the scene. He has been charged with attempted kidnapping, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and driving while intoxicated.

“It’s like if they were my angels at that moment,” the victim said of her rescuers.

“Sometimes people don’t want to get involved,” the daughter told the station. “They might have kept on going, and wondered what might have happened if they had stopped. In life, you’re going to take chances, so why not do it for a life.”
