On Sunday evening, an armed suspect opened fire at a busy Walmart. At least two people were injured in the attack, including a 16-year-old girl. After receiving calls about an active shooter, law enforcement rushed to the scene. However, it was an armed citizen that ultimately stopped the gunman in his tracks.
The incident took place at a Walmart in Tumwater, Washington at approximately 5:00 pm local time on Sunday.
Several 911 calls were received claiming that multiple shots had been fired, according to a report by the Daily Mail.
According to local law enforcement, the male suspect was attempting to carjack a vehicle. The driver of the car was wounded when the gunman opened fire. After EMS arrived on the scene, the driver was airlifted to a hospital in Seattle and deemed to be in critical condition.
A 16-year-old girl also sustained minor wounds at a location nearby.
Authorities state that the incident began in the parking lot of a high school near the Walmart. Police were notified of an erratic driver, then received reports of shots fired and a carjacking at an intersection near the store.
Officers spotted a stolen vehicle and chased it to the Walmart. The suspect exited the stolen vehicle and attempted to carjack another, shooting the driver.
Witnesses claim at least 10 shots were fired.
“Heard about 5 or 6 pops. Ran out a side emergency exit and attempted to run to my car in the parking lot but heard 4 more pops in the lot,” said Darren Gossler, an eyewitness.
“Caught a quick glimpse of a male with what appeared to be a handgun,” he added. “Ducked under some cars and ran to Costco.”
A bystander, who was armed, then opened fire on the suspect. The suspect was reportedly killed by the armed citizen.
