On Friday, a man was struck and killed by a woman who drove her car onto a baseball field during a game. Carol Sharrow drove her vehicle through the main gate of the facility, continuing onto the field. As the car headed straight toward a group of children, Douglas Parkhurst pushed them out of the way, but he was hit.

Parkhurst, a 68-year-old Vietnam veteran, was close to a group of kids at Goodall Park in Sanford, Maine, when the car began tearing through the field. He shoved them, ensuring they were out of harm’s way, and tried to get the vehicle to stop, according to a report by the Daily Mail.

He was struck by the car and died of his injuries.

Justin Clifton, who witnessed Sharrow driving on the field, said that Parkhurst gave his life to save the children who were near him.

“After the car got off the field, [Sharrow] came to the gate, and the older guy pushed the kids right out of the way,” he said. “He took the hit for the kids.”

Diana Bittner, who shared her account on Facebook, stating, “I stood there in horror as this crazy woman, tires smoking, raced up and down the road then drove right onto the ball field.”

“Kids screaming and running for their lives,” she continued. “They tried to close the huge metal gate to prevent her from leaving and she smashed right through it.”

“That poor man was trying to help close the gate and went flying onto the street. It was a scene I will never forget,” Bittner added. “I’m so grateful she didn’t hurt anyone else, but everyone there I’m sure were all as traumatized as I was.”

“Just horrible and so sad for this man and his family.”

Parkhurst’s family is devastated by the loss. His niece, Michelle, stated, “He is going to be missed really badly. He was my favorite uncle.”

According to police, around 200 to 300 people were present at the field when Sharrow came tearing in with her vehicle.

After striking Parkhurst, she fled the scene but was later arrested and booked into York County Jail.

Sharrow, 51, is facing a manslaughter charge.
