On Wednesday morning, an interstate became littered with cold, hard cash when the backdoor on a Brinks armored truck flew open, leading hundreds of thousands of dollars to spill across the roadway. Opportunistic drivers leaped out of their vehicles, looking to take advantage of the spill by scooping up as many of the bills as they could carry.

The incident took place on Interstate 70 near Indianapolis, according to a report by the New York Post.

“Bags of money were falling out of the back onto the interstate,” said Cpl. Brock McCooe, an Indiana State Police officer. “Sort of something out of a movie scene, where you have bills, loose bills flying all over the interstate, vehicles stopping, people getting out of their cars.”

Video captured at the scene shows the money strewn along the edge of the highway. One initial estimate suggested that as much as $600,000 may have flown onto the interstate, though local law enforcement later stated that they weren’t entirely sure of the precise amount.

Nearby residents also took part in the chaos caused by the flying greenbacks, hoping fences that separated the interstate from surrounding neighborhoods as they sought a quick payday.

Why the Brinks truck door flew open is still unclear. The driver wasn’t even aware of the problem until another motorist signaled him.

Officers have made it clear that anyone who took advantage of the spill by taking some of the cash has committed a crime.

“Anyone who picked up money can be charged with theft,” said Indiana State Patrol Sgt. John Perrine in a tweet. “If you have money from the incident to return, contact the Indiana State Police.”

Law enforcement officials are also reviewing any video captured at the scene to identify the license plates of motorists, including a school bus driver, who helped themselves to some of the money.

“If you’re willing to, in good conscience, turn it back in, there’s amnesty,” said McCooe. “There’s no real questions asked if you’re willing to give it back.”
