Two men who broke into a house were surprised when the homeowner, who was away when the burglary began, returned home. The homeowner, on discovering his house had been broken into, went inside. There he was surprised to find the two men, both of whom were armed. The homeowner, though, was willing to fight.

The incident occurred in the Colonial Acres neighborhood of Memphis, Tennessee, Friday evening.

Both of the men who had broken into the house were pronounced dead at the scene.

“I see my house being ransacked and the dog was still going hysterical in the cage,” the homeowner, who has not been identified, said. “When he saw me he notified the other individual that was with him, ‘hey, they are here.’”

The men inside drew guns. The homeowner, though, was able to make it to a closet where he had a rifle stored.

“I had my own personal AK-47,” he said.

Many opponents of firearm ownership demonize rifles like the AK-47 and say they have no place in civilian self-defense. The homeowner proved otherwise.

There had been drive-by shootings at his house before, and he was ready to defend himself.

“I don’t know what’s going on but I know I’m going to defend my life to the best of my ability,” he said.

“MPD identified the two men who were shot and killed as 28-year-old Azell Witherspoon and 17-year-old Demond Robinson,” WMC5 reports.

In the interview the homeowner gave to police, he seemed composed and somewhat philosophical.

“These boys need their father and need some type of discipline. They’re out here without any fear,” the homeowner said.

“It was either me or them,” he added.

The Memphis police detained the homeowner, briefly, but let him go after examining the series of events. The homeowner had cameras in the house and the footage corroborated his version of events.

The story may not be over, though, as incidents like this often incite retaliatory backlash.

“That’s a possibility,” the homeowner said. “You never know how someone else’s family may perceive the situation, but I mean, I just have to take it one day at a time.”
