Former Golden State governor and movie icon Arnold Schwarzenegger is in recovery after emergency open-heart surgery. The procedure was a life-saving effort to correct complications that had developed when a heart valve replacement in the 70-year-old failed. Though the emergency procedure is complete, Schwarzenegger’s condition is still not fully known.

Schwarzenegger is recovering at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, The Daily Mail reports. Schwarzenegger had a transcatheter pulmonary valve replacement Thursday, which reportedly failed. The operation is “minimally-invasive,” though it often is listed as a high risk surgery becasue the patients who receive it are in an extremely high-risk category and failures are common.

The image above shows Schwarzenegger “puffing on a cigar,” DM notes,  as he and “a friend are seen leaving the Waldorf Astoria Hotel after having lunch with his son Patrick Schwarzenegger in Beverly Hills on Wednesday, a day before his procedure.”

This isn’t the first time Schwarzenegger has had the procedure, either. In 1997, he went to Mexico for a valve replacement surgery.

“I’ve never felt sick or had any symptoms at all, but I knew I’d have to take care of this condition sooner or later,” Schwarzenegger said in a statement after that operation. “I said to the doctors, ‘Let’s do it now, while I’m young and healthy.’ They agreed this was the way to go.”

“The actor’s spokesperson said at the time that he had a congenital heart defect that had nothing to do with steroid [use],” DM adds, “which Schwarzenegger had admitted to using during his time as a world-class bodybuilder.”

Schwarzenegger spoke to reporters in Australia recently and indicated he is feeling fine for his age.

“I don’t even think that I’m 70, I know I’m 70, but so what?” he said. “It’s only on my passport or my driver’s license, but I feel the same way as I did 20 years ago.”

“I feel good about myself. I work out. I make my movies. Life is great. I feel useful and productive,” he added.
