ABC has rebooted the 30-year-old sitcom Roseanne. Many scratched their heads at the resurrection of the old show, and wondered why mainstream network television, struggling under the new normal of streaming services like Netflix, would gamble on a show it had already cancelled once. But the new Roseanne is a hit, even with President Trump.
The creators believe Roseanne’s on-screen persona is more timely now than when the show originally aired in the 80s. And the character is a Trump supporter.
When the show ran Tuesday, an estimated 18.4 million viewers tuned in. The actual president was so impressed with the show’s debut ratings that he called Roseanne Barr to congratulate her.
In an appearance on Thursday’s episode of Good Morning America, Barr talked about the phone call.
“It was pretty exciting, I’ll tell you that much,” Barr said. “They said ‘Hold please for the President of the United States of America,’ and that was about the most exciting thing ever, and it was very sweet of him to congratulate us.”
“Well, you know, we just kinda had a private conversation, but we talked about a lot of things, and he’s just happy for me,” she added. “I’ve known him for many years and he’s done a lot of nice things for me over the years and so it was just a friendly conversation about working and television and ratings … Oh yeah, he really understands ratings and how they measure things, and that’s kind of been an interest of mine too for a long time.”
Barr’s outspoken support for Trump has taken many in Hollywood by surprise. “IT’S OVER! HE WON! PRAYERS ANSWERED! OMG! BREXIT! USA! THE PEOPLE HAVE ASSUMED POWER OVER THE OLIGARCHS! CONGRATULATIONS, AMERICANS!” she wrote on Twitter after the 2016 election. The feud that ensued was enough to drive Barr to leave social media behind and delete her accounts.
The interview below, from the Jimmy Kimmel show, is a pretty frank discussion of Barr’s politics.
