China appeared to be celebrating the exit of President Donald Trump from the White House and at the same time, implicitly rejoicing the ascent of Joe Biden as the 46th US President.

Hours after the end of Trump’s presidency, Xinhua News, the official news agency of Communist China tweeted: “Good Riddance, Donald Trump!”

The state-owned and controlled media also drummed up its criticism of the outgoing Trump administration with another tweet featuring a story entitled “History will make fair evaluation of Trump administration” where Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying commented on what she claimed to be “lies” and “deception” of the Trump administration and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

“No matter how Mike Pompeo and his likes lie, deceive or spread hatred and confrontation, people will make the right judgment, and history will make a fair evaluation of the Trump administration: FM spokesperson,” the tweet read.

The Trump administration has been tough on China in various measures from implementing trade sanctions, to blacklisting Chinese firms with ties to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). President Trump has also constantly blamed the Communist country for the spread of the deadly coronavirus.

Most recently, the Trump administration confronted China on its treatment of the country’s Muslim Uyghur population in its Xinjiang province, declaring that the country was committing crimes against humanity and genocide — becoming the first country in the world to do so.

Biden’s warmer stance on China

Last year, the State Department also designated the Confucius Institute US Center as a “foreign mission” of the CCP. The US also ended its exchange programs with China, calling them ‘propaganda,’ among others.

On Wednesday morning, Xinhua posted a series of tweets about Biden’s inauguration — signaling a warmer reception to the new administration.

During his 2020 presidential campaign, Biden said the Chinese communist party was “not bad folks.”

President Biden signaled a friendlier stance to China during multiple occasions during his campaign  — his nominee for Director of National Intelligence, Avril Haines, also appeared before the Senate Intelligence Committee, and said that the new Democratic chief executive wants to view China as a “global competitor” and not as an adversary.”

Last year, Biden also said the US should not “punish” China for COVID-19 and publicly said that it is also in the US’ interest for China to grow.

China sanctions Trump admin officials

Meanwhile, on the day of Biden’s inauguration, China announced sanctions against some officials of the Trump administration including Pompeo, former National Security Adviser Robert O’Brien and former trade adviser Peter Navarro.

“China has decided to sanction 28 persons who have seriously violated China’s sovereignty and who have been mainly responsible for such U.S. moves on China-related issues,” China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement.

Also included in the sanction were former deputy national security adviser Matthew Pottinger, former Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar, former US Ambassador to the United Nations Kelly Craft, assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs David Stilwell and under Secretary of State for Economic Growth, Energy, and the Environment Keith Krach, former national security adviser John Bolton.

“These individuals and their immediate family members are prohibited from entering the mainland, Hong Kong and Macao of China. They and companies and institutions associated with them are also restricted from doing business with China,” the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Wednesday.

Days before the end of the Trump presidency, China warned US officials against targeting China in a Xinhua News commentary.

“The anti-China policy of the current US administration will only end in failure,” it said. “On a final note: good riddance to the current US administration and its final madness.”
