The owner, Tabatha Bundesen was struggling to make ends meet when she decided to put a video of her cat, who suffers from feline dwarfism and an underbite to YouTube. In quick succession, Bundesen and her cat become instant internet stars for her grumpy looking cat, a state which we can all relate to at some point in our lives.
After she posted the video, Bundesen amassed $100 million from the advertisements placed on the video that garnered over 15.7 million views. Bundesen then quit her job as a waitress and started to promote her cat with quirky social media posts.
“Grumpy Cat” was an instant internet sensation with countless people making memes and photoshopping the cat’s iconic scowl on photos of anything related to a displeased look.
Bundesen issued a statement on social media announcing the death of the cat sensation. “We are unimaginably heartbroken to announce the loss of our beloved Grumpy Cat. Despite care from top professionals, as well as from her very loving family, Grumpy encountered complications from a recent urinary tract infection that unfortunately became too tough for her to overcome,” she wrote.
“She passed away peacefully on the morning of Tuesday, May 14, at home in the arms of her mommy, Tabatha. Besides being our baby and a cherished member of the family, Grumpy Cat has helped millions of people smile all around the world – even when times were tough. Her spirit will continue to live on through her fans everywhere.”
Fans of the cat rushed to social media to express their condolences.
“We are all a bit of you,” one fan, who received over 1,000 likes, commented.
