Shelby Johnson was texting her boyfriend one day when he told her he was concerned with her weight gain. Johnson, who says she struggled to gain weight in high school, was shocked when her boyfriend told her she was getting a “beer gut.” It didn’t take long for her to drop an extra 180 pounds — her boyfriend.
Johnson, a student at Portland State University, dumped her boyfriend after he told her, “You’re definitely getting a beer gut babe.”
The most amazing part of his cruel string of texts? The Oregon native only weights 120 pounds. She explained that his texts and the resulting breakup hurt, but she is viewing the whole ordeal as a “positive thing.”
“My goal has been to turn this into a positive thing and empower everyone to feel good about themselves and stand up for themselves,” Johnson told Fox News. “It took me a long time to get where I am with my self esteem and I want every woman out there to know they can get there too! Regardless of the men who say otherwise.”
The 23-year-old had only been dating the guy for a few months. She posted the string of text on her Twitter where she asked her followers: “Am I overreacting for feeling hurt by this? I’m at a loss and just can’t even comprehend how someone who claims to love me can say this.”
She was met with overwhelming positivity from complete strangers. Many told her she was beautiful inside and out.
According to the Daily Mail, Johnson has always had trouble actually gaining weight. It wasn’t until college that she gained some weight. “I was 80-90 and my doctors never figured out why I couldn’t keep on weight. At 20, I started gaining. When I did, I never felt happier and more healthy.”
Hours after she posted her Twitter post, Johnson explained that she was facing her body issues with a therapist and that the overwhelming support she had received online had been “amazing.”
Her ex-boyfriend, who she did not name, reportedly told Johnson that he was really unhappy and felt like s***, especially after knowing their conversation had gone viral. “He has told me he’ll use this as a learning experience to be a better person. And here I am, single and free,” Johnson added.
